The following is an excerpt from the 18 page "Analysis of Push or Pull -for Marimba Quartet" I did in May of 1995 Through the use of certain principles, one can control rhythm and pitch in analogous ways. Principles such as circular permutations, modular arithmetic, and matrixes can be used. Through the use of modular arithmetic, one can either say that the exemplified item being moved, is either pushed forward or pulled backward. Push or Pull -for Marimba Quartet is an example of many adaptations to matrixes, set theory, and the extended use of circular permutations. (as stated above)
This piece was the first piece that I chose to use controlling principles for the materials. It was exciting; the piece went rather quickly!
